Kilimanjaro Route Selections
Whether it is your first time trekking or whether you have climbed dozens of mountain, we have a best ascent route for you. Please select the route that best suits you- and maximize your comfort and increase chance of success.
Rongai Route: This 7 day route begins at the remote, northern side of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. We hike through a true wilderness area towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak, then cross a barren desert saddle, before climbing up Kibo’s eastern crater wall. The Rongai route is a more gradual ascent, and is therefore preferred by those with little or no backpacking experience, but is equally enjoyable for even the most hardened trekkers.
Total trip duration is 9 days.
Shira Route: This 8 day route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west. A 4×4 vehicle transports us through a rich, lush rainforest until we arrive at the ridge of the Shira Plateau, where our expedition begins. We trek across an alpine plateau and traverse the great Southern Icefield, before summiting from Barafu Hut. The Shira route is ideal for those with backpacking experience and those seeking a more challenging adventure.
Total trip duration is 10 days.
Lemosho Route: This 8 day route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, a superb ascent of Kilimanjaro on the little-trekked Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, crossing the caldera of Shira Volcano before traversing beneath the southern icefields of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s highest volcano. We have eight days of trekking on Africa’s highest mountain, allowing maximum time for acclimatisation. This improves your chances of reaching the summit while allowing time to enjoy the variety of scenery in the different climatic zones. This is one of the least trekked routes and we can really savor the immense wilderness of the Shira Plateau, with stunning views of the glaciers on the crater rim.
Total trip duration is 10 days.
Machame Route: This 7 day begins through the attractive banana and coffee farms of Machame village. The path follows a ridge through dense montane forest. This is the richest forested area on the mountain, and also the zone from where 96 % of the water on Kilimanjaro originates. On sunny days, and especially in the dry season, this section is very lush and beautiful; it can also be a very muddy experience, particularly if it has rained recently! We have lunch at ‘Halfway Clearing’, a small opening in the trees, and continue climbing steadily. The gradient becomes gentler as the forest slowly merges into giant heather close to the next camp near the ruins of Machame Hut.
Total trip duration is 9 days.
Marangu Route: 6 day is known as the “Coca-Cola” route. As the only route that has the luxury of sleeping huts along the way, the Marangu route is popular among those who want a bit more comfort while undertaking this classic trek. It has a gentle slope for the first several days, before the tough summit attempt from Kibo Hut. Regarded as the least difficult of routes, Marangu is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro.
Total trip duration is 8 days.
Umbwe Route: This 6 day starts from Umbwe Gate (1,400 m.) The path follows a ridge between two deep valleys up through the dense montane forest. On sunny days, and especially in the dry season, this section is very lush and beautiful; it can also be a very muddy experience, particularly if it has rained recently! It’s a steep and rough walk up to our first camp, Umbwe Cave.
Total trip duration is 8 days.

Kilimanjaro Trip Review 2012

Tanzania On Foot - Mt. Kilimanjaro
My husband and I just got back from hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro with Tanzania on Foot. Before this, we have had experience hiking in New England, USA but never at altitudes comparable with Kilimanjaro.
From the beginning, Tanzania on Foot exceeded our expectations. William, our trip coordinator, responded promptly to all of our emails, was explicit with trip joining instructions, outlined what to expect and helped us prepare for our journey. Upon arrival our driver was waiting for us as planned to drive us to our hotel. The Ilboru Safari Lodge, the hotel that Tanzania on Foot works with, was clean and comfortable with friendly staff and a wide range of food to choose from. A perfect spot to rest after a 36 hour trip!
The day before our hike, William met us with our hiking team including our guide, assistant guide, doctor and cook (Bertiki, Saloman, Robert, and Juma). We were introduced to each team member and went over the day by day expectations for the trip. The team was friendly and professional. They seemed genuinely excited to be part of our group!
The next day we were picked up promptly and began our journey! Absolutely every detail was accounted for from daily snacks to extra toilet paper. My husband and I felt spoiled with our own dining tent, daily tea time, and personal server (Liberate Minja). Our sleeping pads and bags, which we rented from Tanzania on Foot, were comfortable and warm. We were even woken up every morning with tea and hot water for washing! Juma, our cook was amazing. We looked forward to an abundance of healthy, fresh meals every day.
The rest of our trip was just as enjoyable. Bertiki, Salomon, and Robert were experts on the area and answered all of our questions. They met with us each night to ask how we were, take our oxygen and heart rate numbers, and discuss the next day. They were social, happy, and great at keeping up the team spirit. This was especially appreciated during our ascent to the summit. The team carried our bags, engaged us with their singing, and supplied us with hot tea and plenty of positive reinforcement to help us make it to the top!
By the end of the trip, we truly felt like family. This has been one of the greatest experiences that my husband and I have had with a tour company. We would recommend Tanzania on Foot to anyone.
